At Tarpaper Recycling, our great passion is to run businesses that make life greener. Below you can read about our newest groundbreaking solution that makes it possible to reuse old bitumen roofing in the production of new roofing material.
Environmental Benefits of Recycled Bitumen
The environmental impact of the roofing industry is substantial, with traditional roofing materials often contributing to high levels of waste and CO₂ emissions. However, using recycled bitumen in the production of new roofing membranes offers a highly effective solution to reduce these negative effects.
Reduction in CO₂ Emissions: By replacing virgin bitumen with recycled bitumen, roofing manufacturers can significantly lower their carbon footprint. For every 1,000 kg of virgin bitumen replaced, up to 2,400 kg of CO₂ emissions can be saved. This means that large-scale adoption of recycled bitumen could result in thousands of tons of CO₂ savings annually, making a meaningful contribution to the fight against climate change.
Waste Reduction: Roofing waste, including discarded bitumen, has historically been sent to landfills or incinerated. Recycling bitumen reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, helping to close the loop in the roofing production process and support the shift towards a more circular economy.
Sustainable Resource Use: Recycled bitumen reduces the dependence on virgin fossil resources, making the entire roofing production process more sustainable. This aligns with increasingly stringent environmental regulations and the growing demand from consumers and businesses for eco-friendly products.
Economic Benefits of Recycled Bitumen
In addition to the environmental advantages, using recycled bitumen can offer substantial economic benefits for roofing manufacturers. As pressure grows to meet sustainability targets and reduce operational costs, integrating recycled bitumen into production can provide several cost-saving opportunities:
Cost Savings on Raw Materials: Recycled bitumen is typically less expensive than virgin bitumen, making it a cost-effective alternative for roofing producers. By incorporating recycled materials into their production processes, manufacturers can significantly reduce raw material costs, improving overall profitability.
Improved Competitiveness: As sustainability becomes a key differentiator in the market, companies that use recycled materials in their products can gain a competitive edge. Offering roofing products made from recycled bitumen can help roofing manufacturers attract environmentally-conscious customers and increase market share.
Meeting Regulatory Requirements: Governments around the world are introducing more stringent environmental regulations, including carbon emission reduction targets and waste management requirements. Using recycled bitumen can help roofing manufacturers meet these requirements, avoiding potential penalties while demonstrating their commitment to corporate sustainability.
Increased Demand for Eco-Friendly Products: Consumers are increasingly prioritizing sustainability when making purchasing decisions. By using recycled bitumen, roofing manufacturers can meet the growing demand for eco-friendly roofing products, positioning themselves as leaders in the green building sector and tapping into a rapidly expanding market.

Traditionally, roofing bitumen waste has been sent to landfills or incinerated and asphalt production has only used recycled bitumen from RAP. By replacing virgin bitumen in the production of asphalt with BitumenMix millions of tons of CO2 can be saved. Replacement of e.g. 3.000 tons virgin bitumen would result in an impressive saving of 7.200.000 kg CO2.
Recycled roofing felt waste reduces the pressure on the waste management system and we contribute to establishing a sustainable society focusing on circular solutions. By using recycled bitumen in asphalt you will contribute to a full circular solution as the bitumen will be reused again and again as RAP.
